ABV Calculator

What is the ABV Calculator?

The Alcohol By Volume (ABV) Calculator is a tool to help wine makers determine the alcohol content of their wine. It uses the specific gravity (SG) readings taken before and after fermentation to calculate the ABV percentage.

How to Use the ABV Calculator

  • Take a hydrometer reading of your wine must before fermentation. Record this as the Original Gravity (OG).
  • After fermentation is complete, take another hydrometer reading. Record this as the Final Gravity (FG).
  • Enter the OG and FG values into the calculator and click "Calculate ABV".

Tip: Make sure to adjust for temperature if your hydrometer is not calibrated for the temperature of your wine.

How Does It Work?

The ABV is calculated using the following formula:

ABV (%) = (OG - FG) × 131.25

This formula assumes standard fermentation conditions and may vary slightly depending on your yeast strain and process.

Tips for Accurate ABV Calculation

  • Always sanitize your hydrometer and testing container to avoid contamination.
  • Take gravity readings at the same temperature for consistency.
  • If you added additional sugar during fermentation, account for the change in gravity.
  • For sparkling wines, ensure the FG reading is accurate to prevent over-carbonation.
